AN ANAYSIS OF WOMAN’S VALUE IN PEARL SYDENSTRICKER BUCK’S THE GOOD EARTH

ABSTRACT

This article deals with the analysis of woman’s value in The Good Earth. The Good Earth, which conveys the old Chinese values, elucidates how man and woman should perform in their life. Thus, it brings the idea of woman’s value in the old Chinese culture. To come up the idea, the male and female major characters are observed for these two characters represent the belief of being man and woman in old China. The guidelines of characterization and some information about woman in old China are used in the analysis. Through Wang Lung’s and O-lan’s characters, it can be seen that a woman is valued through her beauty, submissiveness, role for giving sons to her husband. A woman, as a wife, she is subject to his husband. Moreover, a woman in old China is treated as a thing that can be sold as a slave. She can be scarified for the family survival.
